Golf Specific Training Drills for the Speed Stik

Overload/Underload drill:

Step 1: Overload - Swing a heavier Speed Stik (Red) in a continuous motion back and forth for 20 to 30 seconds. Build up to a comfortable speed in that time frame.

Step 2: Underload - Swing the lighter Speed Stik (Blue) in a continuous motion back and forth for 15 seconds.  With the lighter Speed Stik you want to swing as aggressively as you can on BALANCE. This part of the drill is designed to program your mind for speed. Your mind senses the speed, hears the noise associated with speed and sees the "blur" of speed and internalizes all these sensations related to the drill.  It's dynamic - trust your sensations and enjoy the experience!

Step 3: Hit 4 or 5 balls with a driver immediately following the under-load portion of this drill.  Just make normal feeling swings and trust that the speed will be there.

Step 4: Repeat the drill 3 times. Total balls hit will be 12-15. Total
swinging time will be under 2 ½ minutes. Repeat this drill 2-3 times a day initially. You will experience immediate positive results, certainly very noticeable in just 3-5 days and in many cases sooner.

Horizontal Drill:

Dominant Direction (the direction you normally swing a golf club)

Your goal during this drill is to swing as fast and aggressively as you can in the forward direction while maintaining perfect dynamic balance. Your physical strength and dynamic balance will improve with each practice session. When you first begin this drill, try swinging the Speed Stik in continuous motion for 5-7 repetitions or 20-30 seconds. Over time as your muscles strengthen gradually increase until you reach 20-25 repetitions or 60-70 seconds of continuous swinging.

a. Assume a stable stance width with the insides of your feet as wide or wider than your hips.

b. Hold the Speed Stik with your normal golf grip …be sure the handle is underneath your lead hand heel pad.

c. Maintain an upright posture and extend your arms so the Speed Stik is horizontal to the ground …be sure your lead forearm is slightly higher than your trail forearm.

d. Begin swinging the Speed Stik in continuous motion, both back and forward, at a slow and relaxed speed & be sure to maintain the Speed Stik's horizontal relationship to the ground for the duration of this drill.

e. Gradually increase your arm speed until you are swinging the Speed Stik as fast as your physical strength and sense of balance will allow. The pace or speed of your backswing and forward swing should be similar, however, the forward swing should be the more aggressive of the two.

f. Allow the weight and length of the Speed Stik to create a dynamic and uninterrupted swinging force around your body. Do not interfere with the centrifugal swing force being created. Gather momentum with each swing until, finally, you sense that the Speed Stik is swinging you!

Inferior Direction (the opposite direction of your normal golf swing)

Golf is a two-sided game utilizing both the right and left sides of your body. The more skilled, coordinated, balanced and strong you become with the inferior side of your body (your left side if you are a right-hander) the better golf you will play. In addition, developing the inferior side of your body creates a muscle balance between the right and left sides, ultimately reducing the risk of injury to your back, neck and shoulders. Unless a person is ambidextrous, there inherently exists a disparity between the inferior and superior sides that ranges anywhere from minimal to extreme. The Horizontal Drill in the inferior direction will help to bridge this disparity gap.

Initially, you may feel awkward or inept when performing this drill...PERSEVERE...if you do this drill daily you will be surprised how quickly you will improve. Every time you do this drill you will become stronger, feel more coordinated and your sense of balance – a critical factor in any athletic endeavor – will improve. As you increase your swing speed in the inferior direction, the swing speed of your superior side will increase as well.

When you first begin this drill, try swinging the Speed Stik in continuous motion for 5-7 repetitions or 20-30 seconds. Over time as your muscles strengthen gradually increase until you reach 20-25 repetitions or 60-70 seconds of continuous swinging.

a. Assume a stable stance with the insides of your feet as wide or wider than your hips.

b. Reverse the position of your hands for this drill (do not swing cross-handed)...be sure the handle is underneath the heel pad of your hand that is at the end of the handle.

c. Maintain an upright posture and extend you arms so the Speed Stik is horizontal to the ground.

d. Begin swinging the Speed Stik in continuous motion, both back and forward, at a slow and relaxed speed...be sure to maintain the Speed Stik's horizontal relationship to the ground for the duration of this drill.

ESP Drill:

This is the Extra Sensory Perception Drill and simply involves doing all the drills EXCEPT the Overload/Under-load drill with your eyes closed. This simple addition to each drill is extremely effective. It will shorten your learning curve by allowing your mind to internalize exactly what all your muscles, nerves, etc. are doing every second of the way. Perform this drill at variable swing speeds: very slow, normal and faster than normal, while monitoring your balance.
